Abstract

Free verse (Ᾱr: ᾱl-shῑʿr ᾱl-ḥūrr) was the most successful metrical experiment in twentieth-century of Arabic poetry. The ideology of free verse in Arabic language were discovered and popularized by two Ῑrᾱqῑ Poets, Bᾱdᾱr Shᾱkῑr Ᾱl Sᾱyyᾱb & Nᾱzῑk Ᾱl Mᾱlᾱῑkᾱ after World War II, they are considered unanimously as to be pioneers of free verse poetry in Arabic language. This research paper discusses the emergence of free verse in Arabic literature. The paper also throws lights on the motives and factors which led to its composition. At the same time the role above mentioned two pioneers in the development and propagation of free verse poetry. No doubt that the emergence of free verse marked a new era of Arabic poetry which changed the set pattern of rhyme & assonance. The followers of this pattern or school of thought are basically giving more priority & preference to the ideas, notion & concept rather than it melody, hymn & chant. The uniformity of the rhyme disappears in the new “Qᾱsῑdᾱh” and its place a number of varieties of liberal rhymes appears which do not insist on the same rhyming sound at the end of every line. The new style of rhyme represents the zenith at which a musical sequence could be brought to an end. In this paper the free verse in Arabic literature shall be discussed in detail.
