Abstract

The battle of Badr, fought in 624 AD/ 2 AH is the first major military victory of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over his Makkan opponents. It seriously damaged their prestige while strengthening the political position of Muslims in Madinah and establishing Islam as a viable force in the Arabian Peninsula. The event of the battle of Badr has been mentioned in various places in the Qur’an. The present article discusses and critically evaluates the reports (riwayat) about the descent (nuzul) of angels on the battle ground as interpreted by Imam Tha’labi in his tafsir al-Kashf wal-Bayan. A short biography of the author and the method adopted by him in his tafsir has also been mentioned.
