Abstract

Despite the fact that Islam guarantees a respectable space to women, their position is deplorable in today‟s society. Issues related to position of women in third world communities are hot topics in social sciences. Women are widely suffering violations of rights and they are widely excluded from the mainstream society. The topic bears high potential of discussion when seen against principles of Islam and practices among Muslims. The Quran and Sunnah present a fine shape of women in the society. The study focuses on the scenario prevalent in South Punjab. Eventually, there are multiple reports of feministic hardships in this region. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan holds a lenient clutch on criminal incidents done against women. This study helps to understand women rights and identifies obstructions in delivery of their rights. It compares what women deserve in consonance with teachings of Islam and what is actually delivered by the state and the society. It suggests that social and individual practices must not be stamped as religious principles, rather most of the mistreatment with women takes place under impacts of customs and traditions. It concludes that women are desperately suffering despite a comprehensive set of rights defined by Islam. Rules do exist to protect the women but implementation thereof is rather slack and at times totally stagnant. The state is doing far less than what it is supposed to do. A contrast has been made between where women stand in contemporary society and where Islam placed them centuries ago. We have to go a long way in realizing the dream of feministic prosperity in the society true to the vision of Islam.
