Abstract
Euthanasia or Mercy Killing (Qatl al-marhamah) is the act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, through lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. Its known types are: Active Euthanasia (a doctor provides a patient with medicine that will kill them), Passive Euthanasia (a doctor discontinues a patient's treatment, resulting in death), Voluntary Euthanasia (patient gives consent to undergo Euthanasia) and Involuntary Euthanasia (relatives use best judgement to put a patient to death when they're unable). The present article is an attempt to elaborate Ghazali’s views on the subject. He has quoted examples of some great Muslim personalities who trusting in God’s plan (tawakkul) had given up medication in certain conditions submitting themselves entirely to His will. Thus validity of passive euthanasia can be derived from such practices to some extent. Sharp difference between the two situations however is that in one situation the patient intends to take his life directly or indirectly, while in the second situation a patient gives up medication with having firm belief in his Creator. He does not intend to take his life but rather submits himself to His will.
