Abstract

A2×2 wideband multimode interference (MMI) coupler is presented in this article. The purpose of this device is to perform the optical beam splitting and recombining. It is useful for complex photonic integrated circuits like ring lasers and Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Amultiple quantum well (MQW) structure, based on AlGaInAs/InPmaterial, is used for the fabrication of this coupler. The length and width of multimode interference cavity are 100μm and 4.5μm respectively in our designed circuit and it acts as a 3dB splitter for wavelength 1550nm while exhibits greatly reduced transmission losses up to 27dB.
