Abstract
Democracy has become the most widely accepted political system of our age. In ancient times societies were ruled by individuals who possessed wealth, physical strength or some sort of power. While these rulers were autocratic, for the sake of acceptance by the people they too took on board the powerful members of society and consulting them on important issues. Gradually, these powerful elite evolved into councils, estates and parliaments. The idea of consensus-seeking broadened and over the centuries the masses too became part of the system. Thus democracy was born.
