Abstract

Man is made up of corporal substance, the body that can be seen and touched and the incorporeal essence, the soul (rooh in Arabic). The sublime Qur’an contains cure for all ailments, physical and spiritual: “And we sent down of the Qur’an that which is a Healing and a Mercy to those who believe (17:82)”. Similarly, teachings of the Prophet of Islam under the title al-Tibb al-Nabawi cover a vast range of the subject of medicine in general and preventive steps to be taken for remaining healthy in particular, for both the doctor and patient and for sick and fit. The concept of preventive health care although not modern, confuses some people at a time when new medicines and tools are used for the purpose. The present article discusses the subject through the glasses of Islamic teachings derived from the Qur’an, hadith and fiqh in this regard.
